So i did what i normally never do, i impulsed bought a dream fish for my 75 gallon sps reef. its a blue throat trigger i got from tropical island i know my tank is on the smaller side for these fish but i would like to keep him for a little bit before he gets to big. he seems really comfortable he was out and swimming the whole day yesterday. my question is how long do you think before i am going to have to rehome him, and do you think he is going to do any harm to my water quality. i have great tank husbandry and only 6 fish now including him. thanks for any input guys.

Depends on what size he is now! You will know when it is time to rehome him, and as to water quality you are in charge of that as well. Maintenance would be key.;)

he is about 4 inches awi, not as small as i would of liked to got him but i couldnt resist he was so healthy. and mike had him for 2 weeks prior to me purchasing him. and yea my water quality has always been as close to perfect, i think i should be ok with only 6 fish. ill keep doing what ive been doing and if its not enough to maintain SPS water quality then i will re home him.

Keep him as long hes eating and looks healthly. He can stay there for a good amount of time. Just don't put to many fish in and set your LR so he has room to swim. Enjoy him you got time. Some say 90 gal is ok so your not off by much. Of course a big fish should be in a big tank . Your guy only 4" tell me when hes 10" .......

yea if you see my scape it has huge holes and crevices throughout all of it, perfect for his size actually he was swimming in and out of them all day. he seems pretty comfortable and happy. i even opened up the left side so he has a clean path to do laps the full length of the tank in front and behind the rocks. and i keep sps so i dont plan on adding more fish, i want to keep my water quality as clean as it can be.

HOW COULD YOU DO THAT? PUT HIM IN A 75?! THAT'S TOO SMALL OF A TANK FOR HIM!!! SHEESH SOME PEOPLE!!!

Ok I got that in there so no one else will LOL..

Enjoy the fish and good luck with him. I love the blue throats. I'm sure when it's time to rehome him there will be an ample amount of people that will take him.

Just make sure to make them fill out an adoption application and do a home check.:teeth:

they said the same thing to me when I put my PBT in a my 90....thirteen years later it's finally in a larger tank and it only grew an inch or two in all these years....so just because a fish can grow to a certain size doesn't mean it will...enjoy your trigger give it a healthy diet and good water quality and you may have it for many years....BTW thats it in my avatar which was taken in 2005 when I joined here

awesome thanks mike, he looks like a happy healthy tang in the pic. one day soon i will probably be getting a 90 gallon and he is very active for a blue throat and from what i have heard about them so i am happy with my decision.

Hey jarrett is he picking at any corals?
I've been thinking of getting one but a little scared he may nip at my Lps sps or zoas
Do they get along with tangs?
Do they eat cleaner shrimps or cleanup crew?
Thx

i dont know if i just got really lucky but the guy i got basically hasn't lived up at all to what i have read online. he hasn't went after any of my corals and i have mainly sps , zoos, and some torches. he gets along perfectly with my other fish which are all much smaller then him except my wrasse. and has not gone after one hermit crab or snail so far from what i have seen. i am sure everyone else's situation could be different.

hey guys out of curiosity should i be feeding him algae on a clip as well? i know some triggers i had would always go up and eat it but i dont know if that was just because they enjoyed ripping it off the clip or actually enjoyed eating it.
