I have a SSB and I want to slowly switch out my sand to Black Tahitian Moon Sand (http://www.aquariumguys.com/moonsand.html). Why? Becuase I like the look. I'm figuring I syphon out a bit at a time of my old sand and adding in twice of the black sand each water change. I will try to do this over the course of 6-8 months. Right now I have a very shallow sand bed with maybe 1/4 - 1/2" of sand across a 24"x8" tank foot print. So essentially, I want to a) slowly replace my old sand b) while makingthe sandbed a little deeper c) doing all this with my inhabitants in the tank.
I know towards the later phase of this transition, I will be syphoning bits of my new black sand with my old "white" sand, which seems like a waste, but I got a 20lb bag to play around with.
Any comments/ suggestions/ cautionary tales are welcomed. Thanks.
