ok so this is a sump design a friend came up with for me what does everyone think? my tank is gonna be BB so i was thinking of adding extra live rock in the sump for more filtration but was told might end up hurting me due to stuff getting stuck back there.. was also thinking DSB around 5" but dont know if it would help bc it such a small arae for a 57 gal tank. or should i just take it out all together and just do a simple sump with filter sock skimmer and return my skimmer is rated for 120 gal and im planning on having 65-75 lbs of rock in display.. thanks for into and yes it will be 3 baffles not 4

I am a little lost. is the skimmer area and the Live Rock (fuge) area connected somehow? How is the water going to get into the fuge area.

I am a big proponent of having dual drains, one to the skimmer area and one to the fuge area. 2 drains so that you can control the flow into the fuge to keep it slower than the rest of the system. And some say that you should not run the skimmer off of a fuge section, since you may suck up a good amount of pods. I know that it is hard to do with a small area (I am lucky enough to run a 90 gallon fuge).

But your pic does not really tell how the water flow will work.

So you will have the LR section the highest section, that overflows directly into the return area? Then the sock will dump into the skimmer section and then baffle to the return?

I would have dual drain (or just tee it off) to go into the LR section and the fuge section. If this is going to be a custom sump, I would make the skimmer section just big enough for the skimmer, about 1" all around. Then you can make the LR section as large as possible. I would go with a reg fuge and maybe a little rock, DSB and then macro.

Sump Design Input?

Hello All,

This is a sump that I designed for TRUCKIGNY :spin: A couple of things went into designing it. I spoke with him and a couple of things he mentioned about what he wanted. First he didn't want a fuge but wanted a place to store his live rock. His Reef Octopus skimmer ideal operating water level is 5 1/2" With that being said I knew that he would only be able to keep a minimal amount of live rock in 5 1/2" of water :irked: My design would give him a huge compartment to place his live rock in. The water level would also be around 12" or so in the live rock chamber. This chamber will be feed separately from the sump so he can control the water flow going into that chamber. The water will then overflow through teeth into the rest of the sump. The rest of the sump baffles will be set at 5 1/2" which is the optimal water height suggested for his skimmer. Then the water moves through baffles and into the return section.

I have a tiny bit of experience having built a few sumps :shhh:

Thanks :fish:

If you have a drain going straight into a LR section without a filter sock then you will have a layer of detritus covering everything in a very short amount of time.
Since your skimmer is your single most efficient item in your sump it makes sense to prioritize the drain to that immediately after a filter sock to remove any items that could foul the skimmer pump. Then TEE off the return to supply any other areas of the sump.
Wondering why you want a LR section and not a macro algae refugium section.

Well that's what I'm thinking into turning it into now maybe just to hold some cheato.. Is that a better way?

I would just do a fuge with macro and DSB. Unless you don't plan on putting much rock in the DT, no real reason for more in the sump IMO.

Like I said earlier, I am not a fan of skimming water coming out of a fuge :)

As for the design I think you have a good person building it for you. So his explanation was much better :)

The Problem with a fuge that small it's not going to be efficient.. My point with 60-70 ib of live rock and a over size skimmer he should b good(filtration wise). BB or not

He is worried about it b/c of the bearbottom And there being enough filtration.

Im not sure what benefits come from what size fuges.

In my experience, the time nuisance algae disappeared from my tank immediately followed the time I started my fuge. And my fuge is tiny compared to my tank.
The benefits with any fuge are there, they may be larger with a larger fuge. But anything is better than nothing.
And, if you have LR in the display tank, then the fuge will be much more of a benefit than rubble rock in there.
