I reccomend tossing it, otherwise; I would boil it for twenty+ minutes.
You could also bake it after the boil. Baking it will remove any stored phosphates/nitrates.

But your apartment/house is going to SMELL! :headache: :wink1: :skull: after such a process so keep the windows open. I would also have a phosphate/nitrate test kits ready for afterwards. You could even consider cooking it (the process that DOESN'T require heat), like that which is done to live rock.

can't be as bad as the smell from the LR i'm curing. can it. that stuff stinks.
It could be much worse, depending on how old it is and how many critters are still present within.

Omg Noooooo dont use it....Ever hear of the term hydrogen sulfide/sulfite? it will crash your entire tank,...Do yourself a favor and get some fresh sand.....You will benefit more in the future if you do it the right way....:grouphug:

Trust me i know, i got some used sand and in about 6 months my tank went down down down hill, inverts died, corals perished....was a long road to my tank lookin the way it is now....:skull:
Hence my signature under my name, Born again Reefer....2 of the more uncommon things i battled while in this hobby, 1. Hydrogen sulfide in the sand, 2.Green Tank Syndrome.....

My mom has used old sand but they were washed and dried for a year before putting them back into the tank. I agree with everyone, just toss it dude.

have you considered saute'ing it in a white wine sauce?
albert you beat me to it ...I was going to suggest frying it.....:biglaugh:

Sorry John....I didn't think all those things were possible with LS....get new LS...

John....I guess you have to keep it alive to reuse it...remember I got the other portion from Kevin's tank and I have not had any problems, it's mixed with mine
