here is the million dollar question that i have been pondering and searching for but couldnt find on here...

How do you clean all the black powder from let say the carbon bag your about to use... same with the phosphate remover such as phos-ban or such a thing.. i no they shouldnt be used this way but right now i dont have money for a reactor... how do you clean these 2.. if you use reg. tap water wouldnt that be loaded into the carbon and phosphate remover... im just confused and stumped on this...

last time i used the carbon i ended up skimming black stuff cause i didnt clean the carbon out to well.... any suggestions... thanks in advance...

I change out my media before I do a water change and add the media to my reactor then run it into a 5g bucket until the water becomes clear. Then I just put the output hose back into the sump :)

i rinse mine in RO/DI water (costs less than the media which i wouldnt want to waste absorbing stuff from the tap).
i also run the reactor through it a bit as falco mentioned.
