I've had my solana for a few months now and everything is going pretty well. One question I have is with the pre-filter sponge, do you find you get better flow without it? I did a test last week where I removed the sponge and it seemed as though my water was a bit more clear. I also noticed my tunze skimmer produced more skimmate. Any thoughts?

I also am running an inTank Media basket with, in this order:

filter floss
purigen
CPE
Chaeto

I don't use it. It clogs easily and yes it slows the flow in my opinion.

Mine is quiet. I just raise the water level overall and nice and quiet

Yes add more water slowly and lower the return pump speed slowly

The input side of the return pump can be turned to adjust the speed, I opted to run mine at 100%.

As far as the pre filter, it definitely clogs rather quickly and turns into a nitrate factory. I bought a huge roll of filter floss for $5 and cut-to-size. A new piece of floss every few weeks served as great mechanical filtration and kept the noise level down.

I actually tried that but had worse luck. The filter floss seemed to slow the flow so much, the water ended flowing over top the pre-filter chamber and into the skimmer chamber. I think I'm just going to continue without anything at all and take Cheif's suggestion of raising the water level.
