help!!

my temp in my tank is goin up now its between 81 and 82 .usually its around 76 78 . i opend my windows in my livin rooom. last night there were close . i dont want to buy a chiller so is there another way to cool down the tank. i even left the cabint door open were the filter is at. i have a fuval fx5 filter . pls help .

get a fan pu tit over your tank or over your sump ,my tank was on 80 this morning fan went on ,now its on 78 ,,use a ranco controller to work your fans ,also what size is your tank

Yeah i am going through that right now as well, i just put a fan over my sump see if that does it, i also am running my ceiling fan and have my windows open with the blinds shut.....My tank was stable at 77-78...Today its at about 79.5 with the fan ....this week is suppose to get hot too, so get ready....Worse comes to worse you can always buy a bag of ice and sit it in the tank or filter....

First thing to do (IMO) is figure out what is causing the heat and go from there. What kind of lights do you have? Do you have a glass cover over the top of your tank? Mag pump? etc.

I dropped my temp way down by taking off my glass tops, wired a 12cm computer fan to an old linksys adapter (really, really easy to do) and aimed it to blow accross the top of my main tank. I also changed out a return pump which in total brought me down 8-9 degrees.

Fans over top of tank, sump and added circulation will only go so far. For a 55 you can get a chiller for very cheap.

Buying a chiller was the best investment I made! Since adding the chiller AND controller my tank has been THRIVING! Reef life likes stable temperature. (Different from tidal life- some corals do very well with swings bigger than 2 degrees)

Just watch that salinity level. Evaporative cooling, the term speaks for itself. Take Ronen's advice and get a Ranco controller for stability. Otherwise, it becomes a daily balancing act.

How about an air-conditioner for your room? This way everybody can stay cool: you and the fish!

thats a good idea the air conditioner, but i would be-careful with that as well since the more added things running could cause a power spike and you could have yourself an outage at the worst time....i usually run my ac when its real hot out and run the power cord across the room so i dont add to the usuage from the tank....

I used to use an AC, but it does not prevent temp swings. Also, when I added my 400W halides it was nowhere near enough... An AC helps, but all it takes is for the Girl Friend to get cold or for the temp to fluctuate by more than 2 degrees between lights on and lights out and it defeats a lot of the benefits.

Well i just did a trial and error now and it seems so far that a fan on top of the tank blowing into my canopy vs sitting over the sump works better for lowering the temp....gonna be a rough week for the ones w/o chillers!!! :anger2:

A AC with fans should be fine for a 55 guys ,i have 90 gal with 2x175w MH and 2x125wVHOs and my tank stay lower then 80 ,that if only i have the AC on .ohter wise ,you may not have no choice for a chiller ,also if you do get one ,make sure you stick around for a bit and make sure you test the chiller when it on so your fuses or breaker dont pop when it turn on ,it draws electric ,just for you to know ,it is a AC for water and works and uses eletric like an AC

If your temp is fine from say Sept - May, then it's better to just get a fan and an A/C for your apartment, specially if the A/C can cool your apartment down and your tank stay at the right temp. It doesn't make sense to get a chiller where your only going to need it for a couple of months when a fan & A/C can do the same thing.

As crazy as it sounds, I have more problems with my temperature in the winter! I live in an older pre-war apartment building. I get so much heat at times that even when I shut down all of the radiators, the heat from the riser pipes raises the temperature in the apartment to an uncomfortable level... I geuss it all depends on where you live.

I actually have a similar situation as my apartment is hotter in the winter, from the heat, then in the summer. I usually have my windows open and some times need to run the A/C. It's probably a more common problem for people that live in the city.

my tank was 90 degrees when i came home from work ..i have 8x54 watt t-5 retro in a canopy....i immediatly threw in some ice, turned off my lights put on the a/c installed a 4" fan inside of a 5 gallon plastic paint bucket and put it over my sump everything in my 90 gallon was closed up
and just hanging over ..unplugged the heater in sump also..tank is now at 81 degrees....how do i keep it at 78 ???with my lights running again?

get a chiller i am about to install the chiller on my tank coz my temp on my 72 is now at 80 degrees from 78 degrees.

ummmmm FaNs...... no chiller needed at all... big waste of money, time, space should i keep going lmao.. get a couple of fans put it over the top of the tank and let it blow across...:wink1:
