If I got a used tank with one of those huge AGA overflow boxes, do you guys think I could take out the AGA box and build my own with 3 pieces of glass and some silicone? That way I could make it smaller, not a lot smaller. But if any fish were to jump into the box I wouldn't have to kill myself not being able to see into it.

Only thing I'd be worried about would be how could I make teeth in the glass?Any ideas?

The older AGA/Oceanic overflows were acrylic, which was more expensive than the plastic they now use, but it did bond to the glass. I think it is really only plexiglass that does not bond well to glass, but I may be wrong.

Why don't you just make a cover for the existing overflow box to prevent fish from jumping in? You should try to prevent it from happening instead of confirming it with a clear overflow box.

Anyway..

You can glue egg crates on top of 3/8" glass for the teeth part. Silicon makes a bad bond on any plastic and acrylic, but will hold the plastic when enough silicone is molded around the piece.

Cover it with gutter guard?? Guess I was just hoping to get rid of the huge box and replace it with a smaller one.

It would be a lot easier to just cover it up. Just some early morning thinking.

It's really easy to make a new overflow if you want. here's a pic from my first 20

All you have to do is figure out the size of the box you want, get a piece of acrlyic that's the same size as all three sides, and then cut some teeth. Once the teeth are cut, you bend the piece to the shape you want. And just silicone it in place.

Silicone indeed does work for this application. You're not building anything structural. You're just 'sticking' a piece of plastic to the glass. And as long as you have a good bead on both sides, it should hold. The only thing that could weaken it over time is repeatedly hitting it with a big chunk of LR. I don't know about you, but one or two bangs of rock against the side of the tank (you all know that sound) and I get really careful.

What happens if it leaks around the overflow box? as long as you have a standpipe, the tank will only drain down as far as the normal level in the overflow box. Sure, you might overflow the sump, but your tank will still be fine. and most people only keep the level in the overflow box a few inches below the tank level. SO figure out the gallonage in 1" of tank and account for it in the sump. on a 36x18 tank it's 2.8 gallons per inch of tank height. that's easy to cover. And it won't ever really 'pop off' the tank. ithe hole/leak will start somewhere and slowly get bigger. And who here doesn't look at their tank at least every couple of days. You'll see the water level go down in the main tank and the water rise in the sump and know something's up.

If I were you Kris, I'd get a non-drilled tank and drill it where you want. Why pay to un-do someone else's work?

I'll be routing teeth in acrylic sometime in july or august. I'll post pics.

Glad to see you coming back Kris (why did I have a feeling you would come back, and with a 90 at that!). Regardless, I built 3 sumps using acrylic. The first one was a disaster, but the other 2 seemed to hold pretty well. The the second sump had a lot of "bowing" on the acrylic baffles, but the 3rd and final sump's bowing was minimal. You just have to use a lot of glue. I was able to glue it very neatly, even with a shaky hand.

Also does this tank have a center overflow of corner?
