Orange Spot Filefish

Before anyone starts flaming me on this fish, let me preface this discussion with, I know the care requirements of this fish. I have seen this specimen (and more) in the suppliers' tank for about 3 weeks. It has been in a coralless, rockless, sterile tank. It's been eating frozen mysis. I figured I'd try it in my nano, which is only softies and LPS. No sps in it. I know in nature they like to dine on sps polyps. Seeing that it was eating in the suppliers tank, I figured I'd give it a shot at a better home. I just got him yesterday so I can't say he's eaten yet. I am hopeful.

He doesn't seem to mind hanging in front of the camera. I'm liking his photogenic nature :biggrin:

What do y'all think?

JRodrig692, one of my favs also. Too bad its requirements are so stringent. I'll keep everyone posted on the success.

Did they give you the fish for free? If not they're just going to bring in more and most don't make it. Unless you got it for free it would have been best to let it die in the wholesaler place.

Mike, exactly my thoughts. That's why I left it there for 3 weeks. It was eating there. I know it's not common, but I thought maybe, just MAYBE this guy was an abberation. I HATE killing fish. I normally would never do something like this, but he was there for quite awhile and looks great. Like I said, I'm crossing my fingers.

Russ good luck with the fish. I had one for a bit and got it to take formula II, I rescued it from a photo shoot, a friend of mine had been given one to use as a prop :anger2:
the following is not meant as a flame towards you Russ rather a reality check for the guys saying good luck and no problem, give me a break.

You all need to do your research and wake up, this is possibly the worst reef fish one could hope to keep alive. The fact it's still being caught and sold in the hobbyist trade is ridiculous, everyone in the business knows how hard they are to keep alive. My opinion of the wholesaler who sold this fish just dropped to nothing. Selling this fish is pure selfishness.
Shame on them for importing them, they suck.
Unless you have a large tank full of established acropora colonies it's near impossible to get this fish to eat, and live very long.
Some fish are best left in the ocean and enjoyed while diving, this is one of them. The sad part is the filefish is easily caught, and due to it's bright colors will sell without a problem to ignorant hobbyists. I'm glad there was a salesperson at a lfs who recommended not buying this fish, but the fact is it should not have been in the store in the first place.

I just wanted to clarify that this fish was from Atlantis Marine World. I totally agree that this is one of those fish that should be off limits to aquarists. That being said, it's up to the wholesalers to police themselves. Again, best of luck. I hope you can overcome the obstacles.

$$$ is $$$ most wholesalers dont care who they sell the fish to.. thats the one of the problems with this hobby...
