Sand sifting star

I have a sand sifting star that isn't looking so hot, a piece of one of its arms is missing and it looks like a chunk out of the body is missing as well. Is it dying or is something chewing on it?

Dustin, I've had Linckia's that have 'dropped an arm' only to find that the arm exhibited locomotion and was alive, independent of the rest of the star. The arm grew additional arms and became a whole star....eventually. Keep in mind this was a slow process, but it did occur.

Now your situation might be different and it might not end the same way, so just keep an eye on the leg and the star to see if you notice any further deterioration.

Good luck with it.....you might wind up with two stars

more than likely... the star is dying because of the lack of food in a 34g solana...
just a hunch though... I'm sure others can chime in.

+1...seems that most 'sand sifting' stars are doomed from the start!

Be prepared to do a significant water change with that small of a tank and a possible dying starfish. Starfish can do a number on a small tank. Just keep an eye on your parameters even after the wc.
