Just wondering in regards to very small nano/pick tanks along the lines of 4-10 gallons. Is it possible to keep sps healthy and thriving in a tank as small as that? With the proper lighting of course. I mostly seen picos with softies and lps not much sps at all. I'm not a nano guy but was thinking of setting one up I'd be curious to know.

It's possible, but long term success will take a lot of equipment, good husbandry, and a good amount of time. It's super frustrating when you can go to sleep and wake up to all your sps bleached or rtn'ed from a bad night.

Depending on your outlook it may or may not be worth the money and time.

Small tanks as you know are rough because of the swings... Temp, salinity, ph, cal, alk.. Especially involving sps. - all tanks are different so it's like a waiting game to see how your tank reacts.

I think choosing the tanks location is one of the most important things.. It will definitely help prevent most avoidable swings.

Depending on the location and if its open top or not you may or may not need A good heater, controller and ATO..

I have noticed that the die hard nano guys make great reefers. Most of them don't know anything but a nano tank.

For people who own large tanks and then switch or try a nano I see a lot of bad habits and problems. Most give up.

Lighting is very important since u can easily burn or heat the water easily depending on what you choose.

I would also only go for aquacultered sps from people who have nanos - like myself who have daily swings for the best chances of getting hardy corals.

I would push you towards the 6+ range. I have seen plenty of softie/lps/sps fluval edges and tons of 10 gallons.

You could get away with picos by just going bare bottom and doing huge weekly feedings and 100% weekly changes from your main tanks Dt.

Yeah there's just this little space in my wine room that would make a perfect place for a pico with sps. Of course the right equipment would not be that much of an issue, I would probably end up with the Elos mini w/E-Lite XP Marine (not 100% on the lights I was also looking into the AI nano lighting as well as the Kessel lights, so I'm not so sure yet). I'd also go with an mp10, tunze for ato and etc....

It's just the swing of parameters that concerns me but like you said tank-raised sps usually tend to do ok in these types of environments. I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there with a tank this small with full blown sps, and of course was successful in keeping em healthy

I have a pico in my office. It's 3gal. The tank its been up for more then a year. What I have in there is mostly softy, but I have some hardy sps, like birdnest, monti, Millepora. I actually just put a tiny acro frag, not sure if it will survive. I also have one clown. I use an hang on filter with cheato inside. For lite I use one ecoexotic panorama (magenta/blue)and one stunner (white/blue). The biggest problem is the salinity, I have an home made ato, that works fine, its just sometimes it puts too much fresh water, and in a tank that small, salinity swings quickly. I also don't have a skimmer, and the surface of the water is always dirty.

That's a nice tank. How are the other parameters ca mg, etc..

I haven't check those parameters in months..lol..the only thing i check daily is the salinity with a refrctometer that was calibrated with a veegee refract (suppose to be one of the best on the market).

Because it's in my office, i look at it for 8 hours straight..so i notice issues quckly when something is wrong..I know prevention is better then a cure, but so far I been lucky and no major issues.. I started adding aragamilk, just because I been addidng a few sps...

Here is a picture taken shortly before I had to tore it down to move across the Atlantic...

The Montipora you see on the right was 1" when it was given to me. It grew to about 7 inches in a bit more than a year. Dang seeing these pictures I miss my pink fluorescent plate! (It went from brick to that crazy color in 2 months!)

It was indeed packed, and you cannot even see the 10 inches Sarkophyton that I had in the back. It was fun, but I had to spend my time fragging. (I was manually topping off each day with kalkwasser btw)

Something to keep in mind with such a small system: heat is your biggest enemy, by far! I guess LED's will help drive that down dramatically. Back then... there wasn't much apart from the Peltier-based TECO micro. And from the reviews back then it was not that great.

Led takes care of the heat issue, i woldnt use anything else on such a small system
