Please see the photos of my overflow box, the person I bought the tank from had it with two returns and 2 pipes for the drains, but the drains were just a straight piece of pvc. I am wondering what is the best way to plumb the overflow/setup the drains to be as quiet as possible.

My return pump will be an eheim 1262 for now and eventually upgrade to a water blaster hy5000 or hy7000.

awsome, so they take 3/4", and 1" bulkheads. I would use both 1" bulk heads for your drains, and 1 3/4" as a return, and use the second 3/4" as either an emergency stand pipe, or use it to run power up to a canopy if you are going to use one.

eheim, at 6' of head you will get about 700 gph
water blaster hy5000 at 6' of head will get about 645 gph
and the water blaster hy7000 at 6' of head will get about 800 gph.
where did you get that 1200 gph rating from?
as far as the drains go a 1" durso set up properly will drain down 600 gph without a problem and can be pushed to 800 if the plumbing is set up correctly, but it will be noisy

The head pressure is probably about 5 ft vertical and the plumbing will be minimal as the return area of the sump sits directly under the stand pipe.

Would it make sense to do then 2 x 3/4" returns and 2 1.5" drains? I'm building an acrylic overflow cover so don't forsee fish or snails getting stuck in it.

That or I was considering doing the herbie or beananimal one?

of course you can do 2 3/4" returns, but given the pumps you have chosenyou will be dividing the flow out of each nozzle, imo you would want some flow coming out of the nozzles. you can always go with a bigger pump providing you do not exceed 1200 gph at head height you mention, but remember by increasing flow you also increase noise.
