Internal or External Pump For 60g Cube

Hey guys. I've been out the game for awhile so I need help deciding what return pump to get for this cube. External or Internal?

Good choice.

I would definitely go with an internal return pump on a small tank. If you required a lot of flow (over 2000 gph), and/or you had a high lift to your display, then I'd recommend an external pump. With a standard height of 48" +/- and only needing approx. 600 gph return, an internal pump will certainly be the most cost effective and efficient pump.

So I was just checking out the Ehiem 1262 rates 900gph. Do y'all think it would be too much flow?

I would go with the 1261 but a lot will depend on how high your stand is.

I was thinking of using 1 pump for return and dual phosban. That way I won't have extra pumps heating up the water

The Ehiem run pretty cool, I have a 1262 running on my 90gal reef and it adds very little heat to the tank.

If you add reactors to the return line the 1262 won't even be enough of a pump. So don't worry about it being too much. I don't think it's enough.

IMO you'd need a bigger pump to run the return as well as a reactor. Make no mistake about it, Eheim makes a great pump. For your application it's just a bit too undersized.

I'd absolutely still go with an internal pump. You can consider either of these:

Marineland Euro Utility Pump 4500
Marineland Euro Utility Pump 5500

Both are dependable, efficient and certainly cost effective.
