Total disolved solids and chemical additives to the water, buy an RO/DI unit for your tap water and filter the tap water and use that for topoffs.

I used tap water without ANY problems for an entire year (so it seemed.) In the ocean Phosphate is in great demand and (for the most part) is not often seen. It is used by algae, corals and it will be absorbed in a second by sand or rock. What happened in my tank is that my rock sucked up all the chemicals in my water until they were saturated and could hold no more. This took one year. After that time they started leaching the phosphates back into the water and my tank was overrun with cyanobacteria. It has taken my a month of using RO/DI, cheato, phosban + 8 cyano eating snails to get it under control. This is after two months of trying chemi-clean to no avail. As Deep mentioned you don't want heavy metals from your pipes (or the pipes that lead to your house) in your tank. My RO/DI was one of the best investments I've made. A Magnesium test kit is up there as well.
