My tank is doing pretty well but I am getting this ugly brown flaky algae growing on my rock. Can't blow it off with baster. I have a red sea max 250, The carbon floated up and blocked the main filter and tank got cloudy with tiny air bubbles, thats when the problem got worse. The tank is about 4 months old. Any help would be appreciated...

Since the tank is fsairly new - are you sure it not diatoms? There are a number of 'algae' stages a new tank goes through as it is maturing.

Can you post a pic of the algae?

Flaky? Brown algae is usually diatoms. But I have never heard it described as flaky.

Are you using R/O water?

Pick up a few Mexican Turbo snails, they do a good job at cleaning up diatoms. One snail per 10-15 gallons is usually enough. Petland usually has them cheap. (Not astea snails, they die if they fall to the sand)
