How long can tank go without power?

I have a generator ready to go but does it have to run all night? What is a safe amount of time to have the tank off?

it really depends on the bio-load. I wouldn't risk more than a few hours if I were you.

Thanks Randy. I still have power (keeping my fingers crossed) but what if the power goes out while I'm sleeping? I'm hoping I notice right away if it does.

Jim,
Do you have battery backups or ups units for either your Vortechs or Tunzes?
This would ensure that o2 deprivation is minimal during the time that your not aware of the power going out.

No I don't have battery backups but I think I'm going to get one. I made it through this storm with no issues but I hate that uncomfortable feeling.

Shut the generator off at 1230 went to sleep and woke up at 8 started generator n all is good thankgod

same here, but i dont know how many nights my tank or anyones tank will be able to handle without power. not looking good if this takes a week to fix.

I have similar concerns. Lost powerful 2 pm yesterday and am using battery air pump on sump and display tank. It's i min on and off I intermittently. My fish are good it some of my corals look floppy. LIPA is saying about 7-10 days. Can my tank survive o just battery air stones that long? Woulnt I need to Do a water change? The light post fell i my back yard.
