If your system went without lights for a while and the algae died off this is a great time to switch out the GFO.
All those nutrients from the algae are in the water waiting to feed another crop unless you capture them.

I think this is sound advice, but I would be cautious changing carbon right away--unless the water is really fouled----as the increased clarity will also increase your chance of light shock.

I went 4 1/2 days without light, had enough power for all the pumps,skimmer etc.. but not the halides so I changed out my phos and carbon, but also cut back my lighting and I'm acclimating them just as if they are all new corals...
