Whenever I do a water change I would empty the sump and detritus then add new salt water. It's only about 10 gallons.

When you guys do a water change do you take the water from the display or sump?

also u might find it easier if you just want to remove the dietrus is get a turkey baster and squeeze it in the water.. not next to the dietrus then suck up watever dietrus u can and empty it into a micron sock like the ones u put in ur tank... u dont waste any water and u get rid of the deitrus... just a thought.. something i do :shhh:

scarface what happens when deitrus builds up...... how does it affect ur water.... increase in nitrates and other stuff u dont want in ur tank...

As indicated, I have never intentionally cleaned my sump in six years. The whole tank has been broken down three times, and I probably "clean" it out when I do a water change since I pour the new water into the sump. It kicks up a lot of crap which is then thrown into the water colum and is either skimmed, returned to the display tank or settles back down.
