After buying my "dream" fixture a 72 inch hqi t5 combo, (250 watts) almost all of my corals died including some new SPS i just got. anyway my clams are also suffering. One Crocea has turned completely white while my maxima is slowly turning. Does anyone know why? Am i not using my maristar correctly? i have it placed 8.5 inches from the water with plenty of ventilation. if someone can please help that would be appreciated.

heat was an issue at first but i've removed the canopy and it is much better. prior to my maristar set up i had 4 160 watt vho, and they were doing very well. is there any way to "cure" or fix my clams?

I'm not sure. Someone else is going to have to jump in. I think you would have to place everything at the bottom of the tank and slowly very slowly over weeks move them back up. Or you could raise the fixture. Wait for someone to second what I say before taking any action.

Now by bleached did they just lose color or did you see the tissue coming off of them? If the tissue came off then they are dead, if their bleached theres a chance for them.

yea, most likely its from the shock of the new lighting. But lets hope its not too late.

You should have your light turn on a few hours only per day and add an extra hour or so every week. That should help them acclimate to the new light setup.

Sorry to hear about that..

Check for stray voltage in the tank. It's possible your new light system is sending stray electric into the tank.

Is the clam open or closed? Also what are your other reading.

I'm not sure that the new lighting would have killed everything so fast if anything you would have seen sign in the beginning and not have everything die right away.

clams will lose thier coloration and get "white" flesh from not getting enough light. I have not seen this with too much light

SPS bleachng with new lights is typical especially if you went from non halide to halide.

I would also do an extensive test of my water conditions before I jumped to conclusions - but like others said, I wuld put everything at the bottom of the tank, and then acclimate them up slowly.

He had some strong lights to start with, it's not like he went from pc to mh. Also he had new sps coral die right away, now that could because the lights where to strong and he placed the coral up to high right away but even then some of the corals should have survied or closed up if the lights where that strong not almost everything dying right away.

Unless he kept the new lights on along time and then it's possible he could have fried corals but still something should have survied/

T5 plus halides is a dramatic leap from VHO's t5's alone have caused these problems add a halide with no acclimation you are asking for trouble. next time you make any change in lighting even if you change the Kelvin of the halide from say 20K to 10K you have to acclimate your your little critters. next time all you have to do is set your timer on your tank to go on and off every every hour or so and as time goes on (1 week) you keep increasing the time that the lights are on by about 15 minutes.

I would drop the clams to the bottom of the tanks and and start turning those lights off. it's not so much that the light is too strong, becasue it's not, but it is too strong initially for too long a period of time.

read some of this about t5's

good luck,
