You want dead silent, you need red dragon. The only issue with them is the cost. They are not cheap. But worth it. My dad uses them and I couldnt believe it. Its dead silent. As a bonus it looks good. It got great reviews on RC too.

With the price tag, I guess it is worth it cause it is a major component of your system.

Yup. Panworld is the asian made version and blueline is the US version. Both were design by the chief engineer of Iwaki.
yyup yup
reddragons are great, they are like a submersable but direct drive like a external pump, the chamber of the impeller is seperated from the magnet, also has a anti vibration bearing. but lemme tell yah once i saw the price on this guys, geez i cannot justify on ever buying one

J, If you are looking at it in the long run it will save you some money. I will try to find the threads on RC. I guess the dead silence is a bonus on top of that.

So let see, for $0.20 kwh for 48watt, it would be $84 per. For 150 watt, it would be $262 per year.

How much is money does coned charge per kwh ?

I think were at .17/kw now, I have to check, but it seems the pump would pay for itself over time.

without a doubt it will. Most people will freak at the innitial investment of these pumps. But you get a top quality pump. I have asked a couple of guys on RC to place their comments on this thread.

Think how much you will save if you converted your reef to a more energy efficient system. Its crazy. And it does not hurt to have kick a$$ equipment.

your right, it's the initial investment that hurts.

what's 600 in canadian dollars these days?
and that's just for the smallest pump. ouch.

we should start a thread to come up with the most energy efficient tank, regardless of the equipment cost ( within reason, building your own nuclear power plant does not count )

I just stumbled upon this and it addresses one of the issues I've come across while planning my sump. Do you think it would be better for me to run a smaller mag for my return, like a mag-5 and than use another mag on a CL for my 29 gallon? Or should I just run a mag 7 or 9 for the return?

IMO a low flow sump is like a low flow pub - Id be very unhappy. A sump as far as I am concerned is a toilet and a water treatment plant in one. Therefore I want as much water to go through it as possible.

The answer will always depend on who you ask. There have been plenty of people that have been successful with lowflow but others have not. If your tank husbandry is immaculate than you can go with the smaller pump but if you are like many of us, myself included, that tend to sometimes let things go for a day or two then you want a high flow. Only you can answer that one.

I would sell my BlueLine70 and buy a red-dragon to replace it.

The BL70 is too strong for my tank (I only have one overflow) so I have it dialed back. I would upgrade to the red-dragon, but i'm not in the mood to do all the plumbing (i had it done by a LFS when I set-up the tank).

I don't know about you guys, but I would rather spend an extra $200 through the course of a year on a big electric hog of a pump than spend the initial $600 for a Red dragon.
