My corals grow at a good rate but i bought some corals from a member and they dont grow for anything. I got a green slimer around 1 year ago just the base and i thought it was a monti at first but it has grow probably all together with each stem around 14 in. a month later i bought some corals from a member which included a grren slimer which at the tiome i didnt know i had one,a purple tipped nana and a pink jade. The slimer encrusted around the size of a half dollar and the stem MAYBE 2 inches, the purple nana encrusted but grew about a inch and the pink jade encrusted but zero growth. Now i have bought other corals after that and they all grow fine getting descent growth but these corals from this person never grow? Around 6 months ago i bought some more pieces from him a bubble gum mille and a pretty hairy acro and still no growth from his corals. What could be the reason for this. The corals have been in my syatem awhile so they are adjusted. He has MH 250 i believe and i have LED but i have bought corals from people who had similar lights that grow so im not thinking its lighting

First of all, have you checked that it was a true coral? ;-)

Have you ever compared the same species of coral coming from two different systems? Some corals grow slower than others. For instance strawberry shortcake Acropora versus Montipora digitata.

here is the slimers. first pic is the slimer i got that was just the base. second pic is the slimer i got from the guy a month or 2 earlier. you can see they are pretty much in the same area so its not a light issue.

Hey James I think we had this discusion...but it basically it comes down to, as mentioned already, the system they came from and the type of coral....some corals may take longer or really never fully adapt to our systems...our systems are SPS friendly water quality etcc... so they don't RTN or die off, but they just don't adapt well for whatever reason while others flurish.....ex. the green slimer frag I got from you how many months ago...it hasn't done anything ..not even encrust at all, but still looks good nice and green with good PE compared to a bubble gum milli I got from another member about the same time...it has laid down a nice base already..

James, I had the same corals from same source I think and they grew great until disaster struck this summer. Wish I had some answers. My slimer from Copps never grew for several years. Could never keep mgny slimer alive either. I have the purple slimer as well that I have not been able to kill.

Great topic,

I just think there is so many variables. I actively trade/give away my frags and can easily see differences in growth, color, and PE. Many times corals that will not color up in my water will only in other tanks with dirtier water.

I have always had poor success with Sps when they are not mounted/glued properly or with a heavy cuc constantly bugging them (cleaner shrimp especially)

If I can get the Sps to encrust they normally grow very well.

when i go to a lot of reefers houses I notice some don't glue there frags and/or always moving them.

I notice much better growth when something is glued instead of just placing and simply left alone.

Some people tend to just place frags in nooks or don't take the time to properly glue (use enough glue) and the frags are constantly being reglued and then wonder why the color is off.
