ok this is the deal, friday night i here two click, saturday night i hear three clicks wich sounds as if the tank is breaking, wife hears clicking on a couple of occassions.i understand that it could be a couple of things.i have a few mud shrimp hitchhikers but never read about them clicking.maybe one or two hermits have turned dead but i still have a good number of them still alive.now the question is there is a piece of live rock alittle smaller than a football and i see what appears to be his tail could be redish but i think its more brownish.what would be the best way to rid him of my tank.the rock can be removed with out headache,so what the best to do before everything ends up dead.?

Try a web search for mantis shrimp and try to compare pics online to your sighting, maybe that will help you out better.

well i have been comparing pics from roy's list of stomatopds and its hard to say really one minute i think i have something and the next its like what the hell.and as far as the pistol shrimp thing i have considered that as an option but naturally i tend to go for the threat first.the problem is that i can only get a glimpse because of this position i tried pics but that wont work.and i really donrt know what to do.

now the whole thing to remove whatever it is mantis or not would be to do what im ready to remove the rock if i have to .when i first got that specific rock from my lfs it had nothing in it.now when i order 25lbs of fiji is when all the critters were out and about i tried the heavy salt solution, nothing.then i tried the powerhead trick to shoot streams into the holes and that got me two mud shrimps but i guess that wasnt good enough so whats left to do?

You said the rock can be removed without a headache. Why not just remove it and put it into a bucket with water? This way you'll be sure it won't attack anything in your tank. And then you can figure out ways to get him out of the rock.

Or did you mean to say that getting the rock out is, indeed, a headache?

Get yourself a fish trap ,put some stinky food in the trap and wait (note ,put the trap close to the rock the mantis is hinding in )

or you can cut a soda bottle (cut 3 inches from the top of the bottle then with the top 1st ,put it in the other side of the bottle .making a sort of a tunnel for the shrimp to get in ,bt cant get out )

or taking out the rock may be the only other alternative .But try the trap 1st

If you dont have too many fish or inverts ,try not feed the tank for a day or 2 then use the trap ,Hunger will set in n your mantis and setting the trap with food should be fast (hoping)

I would put the rock in a 5 gal bucket filled withe water and circulate the water with a small powerhead, then put the trap in the bucket with the rock like deep said. These guys hit with their clubs or spears with the force of a 22 caliber bullet and they can break glas and plastic.

The main thing is you have to be sure he is in the rock move quickly using gloves and get that rock out into the bucket without him escaping to another rock.

For the sake of easy, try the trap first. Mantis tend to be very smart and often don't fall for traps. It almost definately won't go for a trap if there is other food (crabs, fish) easily accessible to him. If this doesn't work, I still feel the best way to get rid of mantis is to put your rock in a container elevated off of the bottom with PVC stilts and eggcrate. Place food on the bottom of the container. When the mantis goes to get the food, he won't be able to get back up into the rock. I live in brooklyn and I have an old 30 gallon you can use for this purpose if you want to.
