overflorw....sump....return....GPH

I'm purchasing a tank that has two overflows at 700 GPH each (total 1,400GPH). I'm looking at the Iwaki MD-70RLT as the external return pump. Flow rate at 4' head is 1,500 GPH. I want a moderate to low flow thru the sump. Is this pump enough, too much, or just right?

IMO, that pump is overkill for that tank, your overflows will be very loud, unless you like it that way.

I am not sure but I would think you would want water threw fuge like 4 times an hour And with fish only I would go with 7 times an hour with wet dry. I overkilled with my pump and wound up valving it down its a waste of electric .

You would be fine with an Ehiem 1260 or even go higher to a 1262 and that would even have to be valved down

I went with a mag 9.5 and I would never again go with a mag. Its noisy and produces heat, I had to replace the screws with nylon ones because they kept rusting. I was told by the company that in a salt water aplication you need to take pump apart and clean screws in vinagur once a month. They also said that the little rust should not bother the the inhabitants in my tank . I was not risking it. Eheim is the way to go

I ran a mag 9.5 for 3 years with no problem and no rust. I just recently switched to a 1262 bc I picked it up used for a good price. I do agree that ehiem is better.

When it comes to engineering, no one can touch the Germans.

I had a mag 7 on my last tank and it ran well. No big complaints about the Mag. This time around I'm doing an External return pump and I see a lot of good reviews on the Iwaki Japanese pump.
