DIY auto top off equipment request

Anyone have a lathe and drill press? I want to try to make my own DIY auto top off I need some equipment.

They are so cheap, why risk it to save $30?
Auto-topoff.com (i think, if not google it), sells great and reasonably priced auto topoffs. Get a double float version for safety.

The problem is that the water level has to be very high and don't think a float will work I am getting a little crazier with it.
