So i was given, by a close friend, a total of $100 in gift cards to infamous PETCO, where the pets go. She knows im a long time aquarist, as do all of my friends, but she knew no better than to get me gift cards from THAT pet store.
I had no choice but to enter this place of witchery. lol. I figured id get my puppy some toys for christmas and some dog food, etc. I had to, of course, swing by the fish department, however.
From about 20 feet away i saw one of their 10 gallon tanks with about 15-18 Banggai Cardinals in it. My heart began to beat faster and my skin flushed. They were very small, definitely juveniles, when i came closer to inspect. Then.... I noticed that they were all Captive Bred. My heart rate dropped to normal rate. I browsed through the rest of the saltwater tanks, and it was obvious they had brought in a lot of SW fish for the holiday shoppers. There entire SW livestock inventory consisted of Clarki, Occelaris, Occelaris B&W, Saddleback misbar, Tomato and Percula clowns. They were ALL captive bred. They also had springeri and purple dottybacks. Both Captive bred. The tank of cardinals, as i said, was captive bred, which is great because there is that terrible virus spreading amongst wild caught Banggai/Kaudern cardinals resulting in less than half of those collected making it to export and then even less surviving a week after import.
So basically almost ALL of the fish that Petco was offering, and there were others im not recalling, and a decent amount in total, were Captive Bred. I saw no signs of disease on any of the fish at all. I still dont promote "mega-pet stores" for the very obvious reasons. But i felt like this was definitely a step in the right direction. I believe this particular situation may have to do with the manager who I've spoken too, and spoke to that day, and who seems to have some morals and some knowledge.
But anyway i was incredibly suprised and a little bit glad that somebody is trying to make a change.
Captive Bred is the way to go. Just 2 cents.

No, i know that this Petco, in Rocky Point, has sold mostly wild caught fish. They usually have Centropyge angels, and im sure they arent getting those captive bred. Hippo tangs and yellow tangs, juveniles of both, same deal. The occelaris may have been CB for a while, and maybe once in a while some other species of clowns. Foxfaces, firefish, damsels, all wild caught. This is all from past visits in the last few years since this petco has been built.

I have 5-6 petcos within 10 minutes of me, the closest one is horibble, you would never buy anything from them. Two of the others always carry at least 70% captive livestock. The others carry an array of livestock and one of them even brings in stuff on the rarer/ unexpected for Petco livestock. I have seen Goldflakes, multicolor angels, Colin's angel and other fish along those lines. That petco doesn't even resemble a Petco when you look at their livestock selection, they carry various corals as well.

Im pretty surprised to hear about your PETCO Jaa. Especially the multicolor angel because ive been looking for one of them in stock at a store for almost a year and havent seen them anywhere. I dont want to just have someone order one, i would like to see it first. But anyway that rarer, unusual livestock doesnt sound like PETCO at all. Is a MR member the Manager there? LOL.
And ORA frags at a PETCO?!? Thats nuts.
I had no idea. I have about 4 Petco's in a decent radius and only the closest one to me even has SW fish, the rest just gold fish and tetras.

All of PETCO's clownfish are tank breed and either from ORA or SA and Petco is slowly changing over to strictly tank breed/raised livestock.

From a conversation I had with the manager of a new local Petco, there are 2 different 'types' of Petco stores that carry SW fish... One is the 'basic' store that sells whatever is shipped to them from 'corporate' ... the other is the 'super' store that gets a weekly availability list from their Calif. importers and can order anything they want.

There are a few local basic Petcos near me, but only 1 super store 45 minutes away... But often worth the drive... I've mentioned to the manager that they should have an Email alert, similar to Divers Den, to notify interested people of weekly availibility, but he hasn't gotten corp. approval yet.

Thats very interesting Albano. So they are actually getting in fish worthy of email alerts? That is beyond impressive. So i guess my store is no longer the basic corporate SW fish type store. Thats pretty good to hear. I guess its all about location and customer base, what they can sell.
