oh well, just hooked up my new vortech pumps and am having a little problem. one is working great but the other is having some issues. When i opened package i notice like some black plastic was broken on the propeller part of the pump. it looks like it may have been round like an plastic spacer or o-ring of some sort probly the size of a nickle or a quarter. when i hold the propeller part i notced the propeller which is bolted to the round magnet seems to slide back away from the housing and could be slide right back into housing. i notice you cannot do the same with the one thats working. the driver has the solid red light and the blinking green which states theres a seperation in the pump. so i will call ecotech today so they can ship me what ever i need to get it going. I'm really excited to get both up and running. By the way i have some friends that have these pumps and the new ones run less noisier then the previous ones. nice and quiet. I'm running the one pump turned up all the way and my corals seem to be loving it. when the other is fixed going to see if i can do the same with the other without blowing the corals out my tank.

oh great... i just went to the tank this morning to check the status of the working vortech pump and guess what. NOT WORKING.....oh man. i remove the inside portion and put it back and then the whole pump on the inside was spinning. the i turn off and took out the pump and noticed the same black piece had broken on the other pump was broken on this one and the reason that the whole pump was spinning was that the same spacer or washer broke and the propeller portion of the pump slipped slightly out of the body and got stuck. i called Ecotech and have not recieved a response yet. will keep you guys posted.

That's not very good news. Hope you get it sorted out. This always happens with the first manufactured pumps. Good luck!

Tony I think maybe you would agree but some corporations need to widen their beta tester policy to allow more people to try out new products and help work the bugs out before they are made ready to the public. Most times product tests are conducted in a lab or an area that is either a sterile environment or mimicks real life conditions but doesn't get actual real life results because you can't mimick them perfectly.

i totally 100% agree with you.... thats why i said tunze for now... they should give out more bettas and fix there bugs 1st before releasing to the public... but hey what can we do other then buy and try and get stuck with it... i chose not buy and wait it out...

Unfortunately, that's the problem. "Field Testing" has fallen off dramatically with everything from fire trucks to water pumps. Manufacturers are finding it cheaper to just sell the substandard product and fix or replace what breaks ("Wow, what great customer service. I bought this broken POS and they replaced it fast!), while gaining the capital to improve design. Like they said, Tunze had it's fair share of problems when they frist came out. You guys who bought these pumps are basically the field testers, only, unless you've got a few reputable books and articles, you ain't gonna get anything for free. They don't want cost to be thier problem, so just sell it to you at 2 to 3 times what it actually costs to make, they get a bunch of money from you and replace 29 cents worth of plastic every so often.
I don't know if this helps anyone feel any better, but it is because of the guys who go out there and buy and try something new that improvements in design are made. Sorry some of you guys who bought the vortech got the short end of the stick, but if it weren't for guys doing things like this, we would still be using undergravel filters. I'm sure Vortech will do right by you guys and keep you supplied with a working pump.

David,

There was a part recall on the shaft that they sent to every new pump owner = it is possible you got an older set of pumps from a distributor and not a new one with the new shaft.

I got the new shaft in the mail priority and haven't installed it yet -

It is still working fine with only one shut off since I got it back in april

LMK a good time for the rock.
