i have a 150g, i just put my sump in the basement, and have it plumbed with pvc and a blue line 70 pump that i bought from a member. pump is on a pad and is making a bad vibration going through the pipes up to dt. almost sounds like pump is cavitating but their is no bubbles in dt. i have it .gated back and dumping into sump, no matter what i do opening and closing valves, the vibration doesn't stop. please help, i feel like i did all this work for nothing.

if i take the weight off the pump, the noise doesn't change. i thought about putting a piece of flex, but should the pump make that vibration, i read up on it and they say the fan is the noisy part, i can barely hear it over vibration. i'll try and get my son to post some pics tomorrow

IMO...vibration is a common problem with some pumps, if all plumbing is 'hard' pvc

Are you sure that there is no pressure on any part of the pump from the plumbing? If you put pressure it can case rubbing of the impellor.

If you can pull the pump and hook up a rubber hose to it and just pump water through with no head or anything. Just a vinyl hose in and out. Use a bucket to suck water out of and blow it right back into the same bucket. Hold the pump while it is running so that there is no stress on the pump.

Just an idea to test it.

didn't try flex yet. the pump is on rubber. i do have it gated back, but doesn't change if i open it wide open. i was going to run it out of a container, i will pick up hose tomorrow and try it. i was listening with a long screw driver to my ear, the noise sounds like its coming from intake. i had to put a 90 deg fitting their cause i don't have room. do you think that can be the problem? i originally had 1" bulk head go to 1 1/4 90deg fitting but i just took it out and put 1" 90 i thought may be that was it.

i was tagging along, glad your problem is solved. i am upgrading from my 20H to a 57 rimless tank (have everything and am ready to go EXCEPT a pump issue. i have the sump going to the basement and have been having problems with drain noise.

yea the reason i put it in the basement was noise. its a hell of a lot quieter, but i do have drain noise. i was told to let the pipes slime up for a while. i went from 1" bulk head to 1 1/4 pvc. if i play with throttling the pump i did get it pretty quiet but lost my patience, i will try again after it slimes up. what pump issues do you have?

Ideas from this thread

My set up is like Clown Aquatics in that I have my plumbing in hard pipe up to manifold then flex back to display tank in dining room above the basement. Am wondering if adding some plastic tubing on the intake and exhaust of the pump will quiet mine down as well. Im running a hammerhead gold.

i added 10" of vinyl above manifold and helped a lot. i want to add a piece from sump bulk head to pump, but don't have room or i would, cause it sounds like most on noise is right their. i wouldn't put vinyl from pump to manifold, being if you gate it back thats where pressure build up would be. the only noise i have now is drain, i will deal with it latter on.
