I'm looking to set up a calcium reactor system in the near future. I've been doing some reading and I thought I would open it up to the floor for some advice (best brands, types, etc.) I have a 180 gallon mixed reef moderately stocked. Still sort of in the beginning phases even though its been almost a year! Thanks in advance!

My experience with Calcium Reactors tells me it is an essential piece of equipment for a SPS dominant tank. I hate dosing two part and can't never keep a regular schedule in dosing. Some people on this board is ditching the reactor and going back to two parts with auto dosers.

It is not a piece equipment you can set up and forget, probably the second most tinkered equipment after a skimmer. Go with a good commercial brand like K2R or Korallin, they are durable and easier to set up. A good CO2 regulator should be used to keep down the need to constantly adjusting the pressure and flow. Buy or rent a used bottle from your local CO2 re-filler will save you the agony of trading a brand new bottle for a used one in case they only swap bottles.

One final word of advice, stay a way from MRC prodcuts. They suck big time.

tagging along as i have been considering one as well.
still deciding which would be a bigger hassle, dosing or maintaining a reactor.

I agree with Cali It stinks dosing, I forget sometimes myself, and there's the days I run out, and its another week before I dose, I stopped that right away bought a calander and when the day comes when I have to dose, I check it off, As a matter of fact I write down everything I do in the calander,I use to use aquanote's and a couple of other programs, there great but it a hasle more time, and when i restored my computer I lost all my info, wasnt to happy, But back to the reactor I Heard good thing about the k2r and koralin, Just make sure you buy one that will handle the load of your tank fully stocked, bigger is better, smaller and youll end up dose along with the reactor.. I just set a my boys new Deltec Reactor, Real nice , ph prode holder in side , cream of the crop ....if you got some extra money look into the deltec..I have a 55 gallon , I dose, but if i had anything over 100 gallons I would buy the reactor, simply because it ends up being cheaper than dosing, chemicals end up costing alot for me about 25 bucks a months..Good Luck
