Water change..?

hope all is well with all of u...Question is...do i need to perform a water change if water quality remains constant? My ppg for nitrate,nitrite and am. is 0 and my ph is 8.4 steady. All life in tank is florishing and multiplying. Do I have to?

You don't HAVE to, but it's recommended to replace trace elements (things we don't test for).

I have noticed, that even when my tank is healthy, and I don't do water changes, things go south. Don't know why, but keeping up with water changes has been the key to my (and many others here) success of keeping their tank healtier.

Good is nice, but great is always better. Go for great. If you tank is doing well now, it will do that much better,

Change early and often.

Taking the flip side of the water change debate, and I do change about 10-20gal a week msyself so this is not my side of the debage, a # of people don't like to do water changes every week or even every month if they have good stable readings. They fell that their system is working correctly and if you change water to often or to much your going to cause your system to change to much. This will hurt your corals as they have to keep adjusting to changing conditions.

I myself have always felt that if your doing water changes weekly or monthly and it's working for you, you should continue to do it. Sometime stretching it an extra week will cause your corals to look as good.

as always Dean acts as our local googler.
i too dont like doing water changes as i dont like the hassle. obviously the bio-load in the tank would impact how much/often the water should be changed.
personally, i just change water when i feel like it (i know, i'm so bad). I usually end up changing 5% a month on avg i would say (5 gallons/change about every other week).

I personally change 5 gallons a week from my 55 gallon tank, and all seems to go well. Fish are very active and corals are growing and flourishing. I noticed when I started to do water change religiously, a lot of sea life started to grow on its own. I saw feather dusters, sponges, nudibranches and my cleaner shrimp seem to molt more often. Like in the above statements, water changes just adds the depleted elements from your tank which we dont check for. I would atleast do a 5 - 10% water change every 2 weeks, but I already built a habit of doing a 10% change every week but slowly going to start doing 10% every two weeks. Just my thought on the subject.

well....Ill stick with my 1/month changes...been doin that and it seems to be OK...i change about 10G out of myy 55.
