I think they are hardy enough but medium maintence fish, usually shy. I would put an achilles in that category..

I beg to differ,
Although they are in same surgeon family, I would put them in different ends of the spectrum. Achilles tang is an aggressive tang, that requires large tank. and hobbyist tend to lose Achilles over battle with ich. Whereas Kole tang is peaceful to semi-aggressive tang that can be well kept in smaller tanks. Belonging in bristletooth family, they feed much more exclusively on algae and detritus. And hobbyist tent to lose this fish mainly because of feeding requirement and long run dietary issues over ich outbreak.
Kole tang is one of those fish that can do great for many years and poop~ don't know what happened... kinda fish.
I've got one in my tank and its truly gentile fish, that every one comments about because of the ring around its eye. It really is a beautiful fish that is undervalued! If you got algae and detritus? go for it!!!
