I just switched from Salifert to Red Sea pro kits. I am just a little confused on the alk color. On the card it shows the color change you want is orange . The vid on youtube the Red Sea guy says pink. Can someone who uses this kit verify?
I go with full orange. Its usually just two or three more drops anyway so if it were the pink color the difference is minimal. Also did you check the date on the vid? Chances are that the vid is old and the kits have been updated since. Figure that the color change on the card as the rught true color. Other tests by red sea have similar colors so it reasonable that the uniformity is true.
It's tainted but he didn't say how. Too much air or putting the solution back from the syringe into the bottle. Something caused it to change. But it still works fine.
Mine turns a golden color. I never get the pink or red either. I found it to be accurate compared to salifert though if I continue adding titrate until all blue is gone. Hard to see color though. I will try to get one that isn't "tainted" if not I'll stick with salifert.
Orange/Pink - who cares? If it gives you an accurate reading when it turns green then its fine.
Just check it against your old kit. Mine turns between orange and pink. I mean, when it starts to turn at all from blue to whatever color youre getting, you are about -/+ .25 from the accurate number. Just go with it. Does the exact color and +/- .2 DKH really matter? If so, I cant imagine what would happen if you wore socks that didnt match. Mind. Blown.
The problem with mine is that it's a very faint change from when all blue is gone to the yellow color I am getting. When using salifert, color change is abrupt from blue to pink. Less chance of reading it wrong.
I spoke to red sea, they are sending me another kit.
I never used a hannah test kit, so I cant say. All i know is it has a digital readout. I would assume you'd calibrate it once a month or so. Cant say for sure.
I used Hannah checkers, the only one i stuck with was the phos one. The alk one always read low and the calc read high and you had to be very precise or your reading will be 600
One of the best indicators that your test is accurate is to go to your lfs (a good one) and get a test of the same type done on the same water. Chances are your there at least once a week cruising the offerings. The guys at Manhattan Aquariums are great and would not take a dime for a test. I will say that I only ask for one test a visit so I dont become a pest.
Its also a great thing to do every so often (3 to 6 mos ) to make sure your tests are still accurate.
I got both, great tests.
Hanna is on PPM (convert at ,saltyzoo.com/SaltyCalcs/AlkConv.php)
Red sea, never got orange color, only pink.
The only test i hate to check is Potassium Test Kit (also , Red Sea, but good Kit)
