whats the best way to keep a metal stand from rusting?

any tricks to keeping a metal stand from rusting. what paint or primer works well? i assume there must be paint for sw boats and houses, etc.anyone know about powder coating stands?

I heard powder coating is better then regular paint for rust.

Or try looking for the black stuff they use to coat the back of truck beds..
