Successful tanks are based not on equipment but the parameters and levels you are able to accomplish. If you keep all your parameters/levels in check, meaning good husbandry and dosing/doing water changes to keep your parameters in check will work.

What may work for 1 person, may not work for another.

Utilizing the best means helps, so adding water volume and place for things like chaeto to remove excess nutrients, the light in reverse to your display lights help alleviate pH drop, etc

Not necessary but if you can add it on then it's always a good thing to have a fuge. You can also place your new additions in the sump prior to the display so you don't necessarily have to keep lights out for 30 minutes while water temp becomes equalized.

is a fuge necessary for a successful reef tank ? , just want some opinions

Not necessary but helpful if large enough and maintained properly. I cringe when I see a dirty fuge with detritus all over. It kind of defeats the purpose of having one if it becomes a detritus sink.

If space is an issue and I had to choose, I would choose a skimmer for nutrient removal hands down. A quality skimmer will remove more organics than a small fuge.

From wikipedia:

Refugium (Latin), the meaning of the word "refugium" is refuge or hideaway; in some cases known as wellness area for relaxation and recovering.

I see it as that, as unless you have a huge refugium, nutrient export will be minimal. But when it comes to a safe place for pods to breed... that's the good place. I keep grape caulerpa in mine as it grows fast and my foxface loves it.
