not necessary but helpful if large enough and maintained properly. I cringe when i see a dirty fuge with detritus all over. It kind of defeats the purpose of having one if it becomes a detritus sink.
If space is an issue and i had to choose, i would choose a skimmer for nutrient removal hands down. A quality skimmer will remove more organics than a small fuge.
x2....I keep mine BB and sipon it out every week...it's filled with cheato and definatley helps lowering nutriants...it's also large enough so I can accliment new fish and keep frags. Not necessary but helpful if large enough and maintained properly.
