Optimum placement of a gas generator is approx 15 to 20 feet from an occupied structure, this includes structures that are not yours.

I would think the minimum that anyone should have while in this hobby is the battery powered airpump and stone.

I have my streams hooked up to a large UPS and it runs the streams for more than 24 hours.

Ideally you would get a deepcycle marine battery cause then you can atleast power some of your other pumps occasionally.

A 2 stroke engine in your apartment?????? Just thinking about it puts you in the category of NUTZ!. That will kill your ears and you. Its worse than running a hose from your cars exhaust into the interior of the car with the windows up.

Just get a UPS. Its affordable, easy and when that runs out of juice use the airstones.....

What size UPS do you have that runs the Tunze for that long? I am looking to get one to hook up to my 6000 but not sure how big I need to go. I want to have an automatic backup that can run until I can setup my inverter/marine battery manually.

Thanks!

That is a cheap generator, I would get one just for back up and camping purpose (but I already have a 4,000W generator for that) :).

Your plan of running some stuff on the inverter and use this to charge the battery sounds good, not sure how long it would take to charge the battery since they didn't list the MAX 12V amp. I can see you running the battery and inverter when the power first go out, pull the generator out to power the essential home appliance like refrigerators and charge the battery too, this will justify the reason for the generator with the wife. You can shut the generator off at night and just run on batteries for those extended power outages.

Pierce, my grand plan does include a propane powered 10 Kw generator with an automatic transfer switch. My thoughts on that tiny toy generator was just to juice up the marine battery when needed (until the grand plan is executed).

I have to plan for a few things other than the tank in case of a power outage. I can't even use toilets when the electric goes out. I'm on well water and needless to say my well pump needs juice. Startup on the well pump is about 37 amps. Continuous run is only about 8 amps, but I can't chance damaging the pump by undersizing the generator.

Then the fridge, boiler, a few outlets around the house etc. 10 Kw would be adequate, but install with the ATS would run in the $7k range. Just requires a bit more planning  .

Russ Being involved in the fire dept for 14 years and having been a chief of the department people asked me all of the time what size generator to use and my response was this. Buy the generator that will power your entire house. It is something I plan on doing when I can purchase a house and to be honest with you it is peace of mind, especially since I work the overnite shift.

Believe me, I can relate to that. I'm in the middle of the woods, no neighbors, no cell service (for any carrier), and I have Optimum Voice. So when the electric goes out, I don't even have phone service. Therefore, peace of mind comes in many forms. A whole house generator would rock.....to the tune of about $10K.

 someday!!

Here's another product guys. Maybe suitable for nano guys like me since there's only one outlet (all you need really is a pump/powerhead). Don't own one and can't comment on it...but it looks like a valid option. Any feedbacks?

****I think the UPS from CompUSA is a better choice....however, I'm still leaving this post up just in case someone wants this as an alternative
