Put the PVC drain 1 inch under the water, works for me.

He's using the pump I got from you. Seems like it's still a little too strong, so I told him he can try slowing down the pump with one of these

that will help slow the flow going into the tank IF he hasnt turned the dial all the way down on the pump itself already. as for the drain noise put the pvc or drain tube 1 inch or so into the water and the noise will go away.

What size tank is this again? That pump is max output of 500gph, on the low setting I think 300gph..it shouldn't be too strong if the tank is at least 30 gallons, but if he wants to dial it back even more he will have to use what you posed a pic of in his return plumbing.
