jr.. while in some ways I would like to agree with you on lineage... However here is the kicker. While some people may end up picking a coral out of the water... grow it out in some coral farm location till it gets purchased. Shipped to some other wholesaler, purchased by a vendor. Drops a name on it... then it becomes an elite piece of coral????

Lineage maybe if it came from 1 source directly... shipped from that source. never to be picked out of the ocean again. That would be a lineage piece.

I must admit it kind of saddens me that our hobby tends to become like buying/selling poodles sometimes. (yeah I have a cat that comes from the streets)

In Europe you are supposed to get a copy of the CITES permit importing each and every animal you get, and its "offspring". Which means, in the case of fragging, that you should know where the coral came from initially. That law is never applied. At least when I was in the hobby there.

But doing something similar could help, of course that depends on the "breeders" of expensive corals (I prefer that term to "high-end" which to me is just marketing BS). Aka when they sell you something if you got a certificate, you could copy it when selling frags, then the persons getting the frags could do the same, and so on...

ive been saying this for the longest time, whether it be jason fox, tyree or other one's, personally dfs gives or atleast use to give you a certificate with their stuff. cause i can show you stuff that is the exact same as anyone who names a coral, i mean it did come out of the ocean.

Ive proved many times if the person selling was legit especially within this hobby and these forums its very easy to figure out lineage feedback also plays a big role into something like this because we all know in this hobby your credibility means everything

As far as I'm concerned, Jason Fox Corals are the real deal if you bought them from him, that's what I did, his corals are awesome.
That doesn't mean that anyone elses corals are any less attractive.

Regarding the certificates that Liveaquaria sends for their DFS products, all I received is a "Certified Captive Grown Corals (CCGC)" certificate. It has a certificate number, but no date, does not describe the frag/colony, so pretty much useless to prove anything when it comes to lineage.

I personally feel the fact that it is a "Jason fox" or not doesn't affect my purchase. He does have beautiful corals and i did purchase a few at the swap but not because it was a "Jason fox" this or that. It was beautiful and i felt it was a good deal.

In purchasing anything there are the real deal and there are counterfeits. who knows how many people are carrying fake LV bags or Prada or whatever women buy thinking its real or know its fake. When your buying second hand when it comes to corals for me personally i decide if it is a good price for that particular type of coral and if it looks healthy and good color. Whether its tyree, or jason fox or whatever other "label" for me isn't factored in. its just too difficult to know for certain. the seller could be wrong or just lying.

I'm curious would anyone here really buy a "Jason fox" coral for more money if there was a vendor right next to him selling the same exact coral and it looks the same (brightness color etc) for less? and choose the Jason fox one purely because now they have a "Jason fox" coral?

You want a guarantee then buy it from him! thats the only guaranteed way that your not getting ripped off.. Jason is a great guy and has nice stuff but he gets top dollar and its justified, he just got back from INDO to personal harvest corals that one day in the near future after he grows them out and frags them will be come available for us to buy.. This all come with a price, me personally if I want a JF coral then I go to JF and buy it.

Disclaimer:::

This thread was put together by me to see if someone knew of a way to validate the authenticity of Jason fox corals!

This thread is in no way aimed at bashing or slandering the Jason fox name or his corals
This is a simple attempt at a solution for identifying the real and fake corals that make money for crooked or greedy people and empty the pockets of hard working reefers.

Thank you to all who have shared opinions and ideas on this thread.

Your 101% correct , if you like it then buy it but I really wish I could identify them , I have seen plenty of coral mislabeled but that's nothing google images can't help with on the fly !!!

Overall I just wish they had a j fox frag book lol and good shopping at the swap , post some pics if you can .

Trying to identify a coral by it's color doesn't make any sense IMO, one SPS can look dramatically different in any tank you put it. The only correct way to describe sps is by using it's scientific name (if known). Rest is just agreed upon by people who distribute given frag. I don't necessary follow a "LE" hype, but any coral can be expensive if there is market for it and it looks nice. Other problem with sps is that they usually start to look awesome when they grow into a multibranch piece.

Marcin, great minds think alike. With SPS, knowing what you are getting can be really tricky, different reef-keepers will have different colors depending on a large variety of factors. Many LPS and Zoas are often easier to tell. As for the JF thing, I can't speak to any SPS he has co-opted but I do have a lepto from him and a PPE from him. They are both pretty easy to ID and while there are similar color strains out there, if you have seen the real thing then you can tell very easily if it is the same coral as the ones he sells. My feelings on the name game with corals have evolved (some would say devolved) over time. I understand and appreciate the business side of this hobby better now (for me, I have decided that anything that gets people interested in reefs is a good thing, even if done in a superficial way)...that being said, I still prefer to trade corals with reefers who have a common philosophy.
