I have done it several time, it can be done but watch out for substrate transfer. I would transfer 80% of the water and all live rock/live stock over to new tank and make extra water. However, try not to disturb the substrate. What kind of substrate do you have, sand/crush coral? I wouldn't put the substrate back in immediately, i would take it out and clean it up with RO or water change water, wash it throughly and add it back to your new tank little by little over several weeks. good luck!

if i were you... i would go with a bigger tank.. going from a 12 to a 16 is like nothing and then you'll get the reef bug and want to upgrade again in a few months. trust me i went through this whole process lol

Thanks .. I am just looking to settle on a 16 gallon tank as i will be working and going to school part time wont be able to maintain bigger tank .. Thanks for the advice .. I am also wondering if i could get 1/4 of sand and just mix it to the new sand? Use 50% of water from a cycled tank and then let it cycle for 2 weeks?

I'm re-starting a 55 and that's how mine will be done. I've done this a few times before. If you test your water, it may not even take 2 weeks to cycle. Good luck with the move!

I would just use new sand and mix in like one cup of the old sand to seed it , unless u have a dsb then your sand really doesnt do much filtering it just builds up and stores waste so your better off with new subtrate and if you want seed it with a cup of the old but u dont even have to do that
