hello to all , my question is that ive been having trouble with the temp in the tank not too long ago my temp in my tank was 90 and my royal gramma died. that was a big lost for me cuz i liked him alot any way ever since that day i leave the lights off the whole day until i get home. i noticed that algea on the live rock has been goin away which i know it feeds on light. but my question is if i keep doin that will something happen bad to my tank . i asked my friend and he said it might hurt my tank . plz help guys . i have a fowlr 55 gallon no chiller and no ac.

What type of lights are you using? While MH will add a lot of heat to the tank; PCs, VHO and T5's and other do not really add that much heat and may not be much of a help in turning them off.

Have you tried running a fan across the water to cause evaporation. Also think about what types of pumps and power heads you are using. Submersable pumps can add a lot of heat to the water.

I don't think you will cause to much damage by cutting back on your light cycle. Some of the corraline on your rock might die off, but without a tank full of photosynthetic corals you should be fine.

More like 3-4 degrees. Also depends how humid the air is, evaporative cooling works wonders when you have either a A/C or dehumidifier running.

Keep an eye on your salinity.

Just from my experience, a single fan running across the water dropped my temp on my 46 bowfront from about 88 to about 76, and I had to turn my heater back on.. the evaporation is a pain, but it really did cool the tank down that much. Not saying everyone will have that result, but it worked for me with no a/c and no dehumidifier..

I believe you.
I have seen one 7" fan cooled a 55 tank by 11F. I cannot tell if it does that everyday or not.

Depends on how big you tank is really...and the fan. My 6" fan can lower my tank as much as 10 degrees when light are off. But most I've seen with lights on is about 4-5 degrees. I dont know how it could lower 12 degrees on anything bigger than 30g...but eh seeing is believing I guess.

mmh, I wonder if the temp probe placement has anything to do w/ these possible false temp readings. ex. the temp prob/thermometer being placed higher or lower within the display tank.:scratch:

Yeah, 15 degrees might have been an exaggeration... 10 is probably more reasonable.. I have a 7 inch clip on fan blowing directly on the tank, and before I added the fan there was zero air circulation on or around my tank because a glass canopy that covers most of the tank, so thats probably why it made such a difference. It was probably like the inside of a car in my tank.

I had two 12" fans mounted above my 180 in my previous set up and I can report a temp drop of about 6 to 8 degrees. I only had PCs at the time though. The humidity really shot up in the room which was not nice.

In order for the temp in the tank to drop to the same as room temp, you need to have to have a very low humidity, something in the range of <30%. This is call evaporation cooling.

In order to keep a room at 76 degree and drop the humidity to those levels, I think your AC would have to be on 24 hours a day since no home is 100% sealed and our current humidity is like +85%. You have to keep in mind ANY powered lights will emit heat, also all pumps will transfer heat to the water it is pumping.

Now, let me tell you guys about this monster fish I caught on Rich's boat, it was like a 250 pound bass:lol2:.

Seriously my fan worked so well my water actually started to freeze and my hermit crabs started skating on the ice but one of them fell and hurt its leg so I took some crazy glue to glue the leg back together and it worked but then the hermit crab got glued to the ice so I was scared it would dry out so I turned off the fan and the water melted and the hermit crab was fine. Thats how well the fan works.

my tank is at 76-78 i got the ac on 24 hours a day my light bill is pretty expensive
