Typically you would just use old WC water and some poly media seeded from your DT to start a qt. You do not want live rock and live sand that would need to cycle in your qt. those things would get contaminated and absorb any medicine you would use.

Just keep up with frequent water change and you can get one of those ammonia badges to monitor for any amount of ammonia that may build up.
