Think of it like this.... When people are at the beach, they get all kinds of things on the sand.. Sunscreen, food, beer, all kinds of garbage. Not to mention the pollution coming from the water around the greater NYC area. No way that is going in my tank.

I understand it is illegal. And I was thinking the same thing about the sunscreen, runoff, bugspray used due to west nile( what they think killed of the lobsters in the sound) that is why I asked the question. Just kind of thinking about how people risk a tank to save a few bucks. It was kinda just to see what people think. I personally wouldn't drive to LI from Westchester with the Family to lug back sand and all my kids stuff when if you look on MR with a little patients you can get it free or cheep.

Sand from the beach where you are is fine to use in your tank if it is very shallow. Our sand here is much to fine for anything more than like 1/2". If you make it much deeper than that, it will turn black and not be any good, I have used it a number of times. As for it being Illegal, that is just ridiculous. It is illegal in the Caribbean, Hawaii and Florida but in New Rochelle if you want sand just take it from underwater as no one owns the sea. It may be illegal on a public beach as they buy that sand but just go to a boat ramp or under the bridge to City Island. It's not like you are taking a truckload.
If you are afraid to take it, go to orchard Beach and fill your shoes with sand, then dump it In your car, make a few trips.
I use water from New Rochelle all the time and my tank was started with water from there, over 40 years ago and I still take water, amphipods, snails, and shrimp from there. I brought my boat there yesterday
