I have a 6 gal fluval edge with 2 small clowns (for now) and an doing am doing water changes every 3-4 days. My filter has some purigen, Seachem matrix, and every few days I throw in some filter floss. I try to rinse out the media as often as possible but lately I've been wanting to set up a refugium. I am getting my par 38 in a few days and it will be mostly above the tank but I will try to put a part of it over the filter. That will be my light source. The light is 24 watts. I would prefer to
Keep my purigen as it keeps my water clear if that is possible. Now, would I cause my tank to go into a mini cycle or have a ammonia/nitrite spike if I remove my biological media? I plan on doing it slowly over the course of 5 days starting today. I ordered some chaeto and red mangroves to put inside. I figure that I should remove the media basket, place the purigen at the bottom and then add the clump of chaeto and stick the red mangrove stalks through the clump and run my airstone through the filter. I will take the lid off my filter. Does this sound good so far? My second question is, can I compact the chaeto algae into a smaller ball with my hand? Will that kill it? I heard the pieces being snapped last time I did that. Will the algae in the center of the clump still get light if compacted? How do I keep the clump from breaking down and getting into my tank? I could put it inside this thing
That came with my filter to hold the media. As of now my only method of removing nitrates is water changes and hopefully this plan will help. Should I keep my flow on high or low? How high above my filter and tank should the light be and for how long? Do I need to modify the the filter in anyway besides this or no?
I was also thinking about putting my Seachem matrix under the sand to create an anaerobic environment.
