Breaking down tank and have a few questions!!

I'm tired of pulling my hair out for the sake of kissing corals butts to try and keep em alive so I'm breaking down my tank and turning it into a fish only tank and I was wondering what do you need for a fowler ?? I was also wondering if I would still need phos ban and carbon reactors running ?? And whether or not dosing would still be a requirement ??

Dam bro sorry to hear that.. The thing u would need is a big box of Kleenex .. Cuz u will miss the corals trust me ... U can always run carbon as far as phos ban it all depends on ur levels..

I always run carbon even on my freshwater tanks to keeo the water clear and free of smell, phosban really isnt neccessary unless your having an algae problem as phosphate levels wont bother the fish , everything else should be fine but of course downgrqde your lights or you will have nothing but algae

Why not try a few softies? Leathers, gorgonians, etc...still keep some color and movement in tank! But less work than LPS and SPS

I have plenty of softies , I just Realy need less maintanance and I want more colorful fish

I would keep the skimmer and carbon/phosphate reactor. These will all help combat algae. Water changes are also important, especially with challenging fish. You can probably sell your light and expensive powerheads (still need flow, but cheaper powerheads usually do the trick).

Good luck man! I debate going back to a FOWLR setup all the time.

Lol your a trip , maybe in the future but for now I just want to relax a bit and simplify the requirement of a fish tank and not a reef tank

I know I haven't been in the hobby that long but. A fellow mr member and his friends don't do water changes or any real maintenance for months and their tank didn't crash and is fine. I believe they have mostly softies.

Yeah I know it's easier to do a fowler and its either this option or total fire sale and never return ! I think I'm just gonna backdown the chemical and tinkering part of the hobby so that I can spend more time with my kids and enjoying the fish swimming rather than worrying about numbers and levels and why is this happening and why is that not happening , it's too time consuming at this time so I'm gonna definitely shed the corals and the extra sump and skimmer that I never use and other equipment that may be taking up space .

Well, you do not need a refugium anymore if you have one. You can keep a sump or you can do wet/dry filtration. You will still need carbon. If you have LED's, you can down grade the lighting if you trying to free up cash. Alkalinity/PH/Nitrate is your main concern.
The FOWLR setup is a lot less demanding than with the reef tank. It can still be beautiful. You can even drop some coral inserts to spice the tank up a bit. Now you can have some of the other beautiful fish that you had to avoid in the marine tank like the Angels, Triggers and etc. I am happy you did not abandon the hobby all together.

The trick is not to get aggressive fish or you will end up with a tank like mine.... A NIGHTMARE...... I will sometimes have to break up fights in the tank in the middle of the night...... I lose more sleep from the FOWLR than my Reef tank.... Just giving you my thoughts and experience....
