Anyone run these externally? I've always run them in sump but in my next setup I want to run it external for a closed loop. I've heard that it may not be great for the pump since the water helps to keep them cool. If anyone has experience with this some expertise would be great.

Thanks.

The only external mag i run is for my reactor. So far it's help up pretty good. If you use it submerged, don't forget to change the screws out for the nylon ones. If you did not know, those stainless screws will rust out in due time.

I setup a closed loop a while ago with a mag 5, it leaked. I took it apart and siliconed it back together. Not a good pump for external use IMO, not the best pump for internal use either (IMO)

It depends on which site you check. I think Marinedepot has a disclaimer "These pumps are for INTERNAL use only!" but I think Champion Lighting says "OK for external or internal use"

Not sure what Mag's stance on it is. YOu wouldn't want it to work fine then all of a sudden leak while you're away. I wouldn't use it for a closed loop. If you spend the money for an Eheim pump you'll be happy. It will last you forever and you can use it if you upgrade or change you system a bit. They can be used external or internal and are like tanks. Use your mag like I do, to mix water. :)

I run one externally.I tried a quiet one external and it wasnt so quiet as advertised is only quiet when submerged.I like the mags very quite internally in sump or outside (been running outside for about 1 year.
You may get a little leak maybe not just seal it withsome aquarium silicone if necessary and if not happy with the mag.7 let me know if price is right maybe I take it off your hands
