Bubble tip anemone

Does any body know why these anemone start as bubbly and in couple of months they become strings

That's a great question , I believe it has to do with water chemistry and possibly on the nems comfort and stress levels cause I have reds that bubble when they want and I have some pink and green ones that stay bubbled all day and night !

Anyone ????

Same here I have no idea but I think it could have to do with how close it is to the time and amount of water flow around it and if its hosting

Fautin and Allen (1992) did suggest that the formation of the bubbles was somehow elicited by the presence of anemonefishes, and that adding a suitable anemonefish could make a bubble-less BTA become a bubble-covered BTA. However, this certainly isn't always the case, as I've seen lots of contradictory evidence in aquariums and while diving, too. Delbeek & Sprung (1997) instead suggested that the presence or absence of bubbles has do with lighting and that the bubbles disappear and the tentacles get longer and thinner under lower light, or that it may have something to do with an anemone being hungry. While I agree that BTAs kept under intense lighting in aquariums do seem to be more likely to keep their bubbles, or to develop them where there were none before, again, I've seen otherwise at times.

Thx for the article. It is a mystery cause I have a pair of maroon clowns hosting it, they feed it, the light is 2-400 watt halides with 4- attinics and flow is pretty good. Water chemistry is good. Could it be possible that they have to be closer to the surface cause mine is pretty low to the bottom.

I support the high light big bubble, low light string theory. (has to do with local adaptation to the depth they happen to be at.)

my girls anemones sometimes have stringy and then most of the time there bubbles its pretty cool to observe.

The light theory is my best bet. I beleive tho its reversed when an anemone needs to catch more light its tips will bubble up to create more surface area.

When there is high light they get stringy.
