Hey fellow aquarists!

My name is Christopher. I moved to Manhattan from Florida 3 weeks ago upon completion of my Masters. I'm tankless at the moment, but that isn't going to last long. I've been in the hobby for quite some time (even owned a store). :bablefish:bablefish:bablefish

How is the reef/saltwater scene here? Are there meetings? clubs? Hangouts?

Welcome to MR Christopher. You've already stumbled upon by far the largest reefing community in the Tri-state area. While we are largely an on-line community, many members do have close personal relationships and there are numerous formal and informal get togethers throughout the year. We host 2 large "frag swap" events annually which bring together @ 400+ people, numerous local and national vendors and internationally recognized speakers. The next event is in the planning stages and will be sometime later in the Fall. There are also smaller more traditional clubs in the area--one in Brooklyn, NJ, and LI.

There are also many good shops to choose from though in Manhattan proper you really only have 2 choices--Manhattan Aquarium and Fauna both on the West side. If you go to Brooklyn, Queens, Westchester, LI or NJ you have a ton more options and MR has a full slate of internal vendors and an active marketplace where hobbyists sell and trade.

We are a locally focused "club" with a national and even international profile, and are affiliated with the Reefs, com blog and Reefs Magazine both of which are produced in-house here at MR.

Again, welcome and we are here to help you transition to a reefing life in the big city :)
