Economical food for reef

Im currently feeding my reef rods food. Fish and corals love it but its $20 a bag. Does anyone have a more economical food they could recommend that would feed my fish and corals? Thanks.

You can make your own! Buy several pieces of shrimp, scallops, clams, cyclopeez, nori from an asian grocery store, and some of the fish food you already have. Put all of them in a blender, but do not blend thoroughly. I got a Ninja blender just to do this stuff. Leave some bigger pieces for the fish to eat. And the mush will be small enough for corals to eat. Place everything in a ziplock bag and freeze it. Your fish and corals will thank you.

But as a warning, feed sparingly, maybe every other day and nothing more than a 1/2 inch cube. In between the days, feed some flakes or something. I had a small outbreak of green hair algae when I overfed.

Thanks for the info. I wasnt really looking for a DIY food. I wanted to go the store bought route, just wanted something a little cheaper that others had success with....anyone?

In that case, try Jehmco. I believe they're a wholesaler and you can buy some food in bulk. They're in NJ so shipping to you would be fairly quick.

+1 i make a 3 month supply for $10.00. i don't use scallops too expensive but you can use any fish i use squid and blue fish, clams, shrimp.

I use san fransisco bay brands. Cheap and perfect size shrimps for my fish. Also great prices

You should take a look at ProSalt frozen foods. They have the nicest individually quick frozen (IQF) single ingredient foods like silversides, krill, clam strips etc. Their formula foods are all high quality fish, chopped fine enough for your fish, but not so small that they pollute the water, and are very inexpensive. We sell more ProSalt than any other blends we carry and Ive never had a customer complain.

It was mysis but they also sold cyclopeeze. I've been wanting to mash up my own blend from the cubes i have. Maybe with the eggcrate idea to make my own cubes.

i spread the mixture onto wax paper about 1/2" thick, then partially freeze. take it out and cut into cubes then freeze over night and put in zip lock bag.
