bio balls?

I am going to start a new 30 gal frag tank in the next few weeks. I will post some pictures. I just made a sump out of a ten gallon tank. I talked to some guys at the local sw store about using bio balls or live rock in the sump. Some people say bio ball others say don't. My question is, what is better? Thanks
