Cellulitis that I had can also lead to flesh eating disease..not sure if anyone is aware of that..either way I always wear gloves now.all it takes is a very small cut (and it doesn't have to be a fresh cut)and exposure to saltwater.as many people know there is a heavy volume of bacteria in our tanks and all it takes is one very small cell of bacteria to find its way into our bodies..

I always have open cuts on my hands. If the cuts are too deep, I do not put my hands in the water. If they are small, right after I rush to the sink & flush warm to hot water on my whole hand & especially on the wound.

Sometimes I even pour peroxide on the smaller wounds.

The gloves are great, but do not allow for precise & delicate handling of corals all the time. There is a time for it & at times bare hands are called for unfortunately.

Thanks for the reminder.

Years ago I got a cut on the 1st knuckled of the index finger on my left hand while doing maintainance. I was almost done so I kept working and washed my hands and treated the cut after I was done. Within 48 hrs it was red and really painful. Went to the Dr. and needed antibiotics to treat the infection. Neosporin is good, but not needing it in the first place is even better.

Interesting that even washing will not do the trick. Maybe I have just been lucky so far.

Good idea with the latex gloves...they will not leech harmful toxins right? Especially if you get the no baby powder coated ones. Any place where we can get the right kind for a cheap & good price?

I started using long gloves when I was getting chemo and had a lower WBC count. They didn't do much good...within minutes they would get torn on the rock. Fortunately I've been lucky all the years with my tank. Did get a rash on my finger once...disappeared right away after seeing a Dr. and getting an Rx for bactroban cream.
