ok so i was experimenting with my sump and all that but its not setup yet i do have pump rated at 500 gph ok now my question is how can i prevent back flow if power was to go out or whatever.i did notice that when the pvc going in the tank connected to pump was unplugged water started to flow back in to the sump.my next question is how much water should be put in the sump before starting drain and return.sump i got from dvs1(phil).so you know what im talking about.

A check valve is just inviting disaster. It will eventually fail and if your sump cant handle the backflow then eventually you'll have a wet floor.
You can minimise the back flow by adding a siphon break on the return line, there are a few ways to do this but the simplest is a hole drilled in the return at about the display tanks water level or just below it. this way it will suck in air and break the siphon if the pump stops. The other option is to not let the return line go too far under the water, so the top tank can only drain the the bottom of the return
