5-6" SB in fuge

i bought a fuge some time ago from a member that was breaking down his tank. when i took the fuge from him it had 5-6" of sand. i have been using this fuge on my seahorse tank. there is rubble covering the whole surface of the sand. if i were to remove half of the sand will it cause any problems? i know you guys are gonna tell me to just dump the sand and put new sand in it, but i'm curious.

you could get away with taking 1/2 out, but you had better make sure it is off when you do so, and make sure any dust has settled when you do, then prepare for a water change as soon as what gets put back into your tank is in there.

i think i will just remove the top half.

btw, i'm talking about a small HOB cpr aquafuge. not a tank.
